Wrestler Sangram Singh refuses role in Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’

Superstar Aamir Khan who is essaying the role of a wrestler in his upcoming film ‘Dangal’ had wanted to cast real-life wrestler Sangram Singh in the film. However, the champion wrestler has turned down the offer.

Apparently, Sangram’s character in the film looses a fight to Aamir’s character and this didn’t go down very well with the sportsman-cum-actor.

"I have the highest regard for Aamirji, and when he asked me to be part of Dangal, I was most happy. Unfortunately, I had to lose the match with Aamirji. This I couldn't do."

Sangram who had participated in reality shows like ‘Survivor India’, ‘Weclome – Baazi Mehmaan Nawazi Ki’ and ‘Bigg Boss 7’ stated that being a professional wrestler, he feels he should promote positive things.

Explaining his stand, Sangram said that it has nothing to do with ego or pride. “It is the matter of preserving the dignity of the respect and love that my country has given me. Just for the pleasure of being seen on screen with Aamirji, I can't play a loser. It will disappoint my supporters."

While Aamir might be unhappy with Sangram for declining the role, but the wrestler is all praise for Mr. Perfectionist.

"He is a brilliant actor... he is very focused and dedicated. He is excellent in whatever he does. He is a huge star and he playing a wrestler will surely spread positivity about the game," he said.

Sangram further hoped, "With superstars like Aamirji and Salmanji playing real-life wrestlers the sport will get some positive attention. Just like hockey did when Shah Rukhji played a hockey player in ‘Chak De’."

‘Dangal’ is a biopic on Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who is also the father and coach of India’s woman wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari Phogat. The film also features Sakshi Tanwar as Aamir’s wife and Rajkumar Rao as a coach.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, 'Dangal' is scheduled to release in December 2016.
