Will Jodhaa Akbar click as a periodic classic?

God, Goddess, Prince and Princesses have always found a special place in Bollywood. Mythological films are a subject matter for the filmmakers from the early days. Filmmakers find it very interesting to depict the stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata in their film. It is also a matter of great interest for today’s filmmakers. Generally, the mythological films are big budget films and the actors and actresses are decked with heavy jewelry and colorful costumes.

From Raja Harischandra to Jodhaa Akbar, mythological films have got a special film position in Bollywood. Unfortunetly, mythological films fail to make their mark at the box-office like mainstream movies. Shahrukh Khan’s Asoka also failed do good business. But still the filmmakers crave for mythological stuff with hope that it will be liked by the mass audience due to extravagant settings and royal life style of the character. But there are only few films that appeal the masses and remain evergreen on the silver screen. One such film is Mughal-E-Azam which is considered to be a masterpiece of love and power.

In spite of looking at the past history of failure of periodic films director Ashutosh Gowadiker has made a bold attempt to make another epic, Jodhaa Akbar with Bollywood's most popular actors Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the lead roles. Ashutosh is keeping his fingers crossed that on February 15 his film Jodhaa Akbar would add to his hit list after the grand success of Lagaan and Swades. Since, he is known for his perfection, he has left no stone unturned to make it a milestone. So February 15 will decide the fate of mythological films in this modern society of pizzas and pubs.
