Why be ashamed of menstruation? Twinkle Khanna asks

Lately, Twinkle Khanna’s production debut, ‘Padman’ is very much in the news and the shooting of the film kick-started in Maheshwar, Madhya Pradesh with Akshay Kumar and Radhika Apte. ‘Padman’ is a unique subject and discussing the issue is still considered a taboo in the society.

Twinkle Khanna is quite delighted to pick up the subject, which is rarely discussed in today’s society.

The actress turned writer cum producer recently expressed her bafflement regarding the taboo surrounding menstruation, periods, etc. Menstruation is a social stigma and people are hesitant to speak about it openly.

Twinkle Khanna in a recent interview to Times of India expressed her bewilderment regarding the taboo surrounding menstruation, periods, etc.

Speaking on her intent to make 'Padman', Twinkle said, "It is a subject I believe in. It's a subject that I have written extensively about. Menstruation is a taboo not just in our country but all over the world. It's not something which is openly discussed and I really don't see the logic in it. It's a biological function, why should there be shame around it. That is what I am trying and hoping to describe through Padman."

Twinkle says ‘Padman’ will bring the spotlight on a "shamed" subject like menstruation. The film is based on the life of Coimbatore-based Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented the low-cost sanitary pad making machine for women in his village. Akshay, 49, will essay the iconic character of Arunachalam Muruganantham.

Talking about the film, Twinkle told IANS, "It (shoot) is going very well. Mr Muruganantham was also there. It's a wonderful project. It will bring awareness about something which has so far been cloaked and shamed, and I am very happy to be a part of the film."

‘Padman’ directed by R Balki features Akshay in the lead role and actress Radhika Apte plays his wife. It also features Sonam Kapoor in a pivotal role.

The film will mainly be shot in the villages. The release date has not yet been finalized.
