When Aishwarya was called ‘budhiya’

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was recently called a ‘budhiya’ (old woman) by an onlooker. The former Miss World is currently busy shooting for her upcoming biopic ‘Sarabjit’. The movie is about the Indian farmer Sarabjit who was wrongly incarcerated in a Pakistani jail where he eventually died, and his elder sister Dalbir Kaur’s struggles to bring him back home.

Aishwarya plays the role of Dalbir Kaur in the movie. The actress was shooting for an important sequence in Delhi’s Red Fort and India Gate recently. Aishwarya was in her de-glam, elderly avatar of Dalbir.

A leading daily mentioned that a huge crowd which gathered to watch the shoot were taken aback to see the beauty queen in such a get-up. One of the onlookers even quipped, “Yeh Aishwarya budhiya ke get up mein kyu hai? (Why is Aishwarya in the get-up of an old woman?)”

While the comment may sound bizarre, it is actually a compliment for the ‘Jazbaa’ actress who looks convincing in her character of 60-year-old Dalbir Kaur. Aishwarya has gone all out for her part in the film and got into the skin of her character.

The film’s team was shooting the hunger strike scene, where Dalbir and Sarabjit’s wife decide to go on a indefinite fast in a bid to bring back Sarabjit to India. In the scene, Aishwarya’s character is stuck in a political situation and requests her supporters to raise voice for her brother's freedom.

Aishwarya’s look as the gery-haired, bespectacled look for ‘Sarabjit’ has become that talk of town ever since the biopic went on floors late last year. The actress has been successful in nailing her role, at least as far as the look is concerned...and the ‘budhiya’ comment confirms it.

‘Sarabjit’, directed by Omung Kumar also stars Randeep Hooda in the titular role while Richa Chadda plays the role of his wife Sukhpreet Kaur. The biopic also stars Darshan Kumaar of ‘Mary Kom’ fame as Pakistani lawyer Awais Sheik who fought to get justice for Sarabjit.

The film is slated to hit screens on May 19.
