Warrants issued against Suriya, Sathyaraj & other Tamil actors

A Tamil Nadu court today (May 23) issued non-bailable warrants against eight Tamil film actors, including Sathyaraj aka Kattappa of ‘Baahubali’ fame and ‘Singham’ star Suriya. Ooty judicial magistrate court passed the order as the actors failed to appear before the court in connection with a defamation case filed by a journalist.

Senior journalist Rozario Mariya Soosai filed the defamation suit against Suriya, Sathyaraj, Sarathkumar, Sripriya, Vijayakumar, Arun Vijay, Vivek, and Cheran for allegedly insulting a Tamil daily and its journalist.

In 2009, a Tamil daily ‘Dinamalar’ carried a story on the alleged involvement of some actresses in prostitution along with their pictures. Film artiste association Nadigar Sangam had organised a meet to condemn the daily and also filed a case against it following which its editor Lenin was arrested.

The named actors apparently spoke out against journalists in their fiery speeches, which was found objectionable by Rozario. The freelance journalist felt that the actors should have targeted the particular daily instead of all journalists. He filed a filed a defamation case against them and the court had ordered them to appear on May 15, 2017, for a hearing, but the celebrities failed to turn-up, after which the court issued the warrants.

All these eight actors have now approached the Madras High Court and filed dispense and quash petitions against the orders. None of the above-mentioned celebrities has responded to these warrants so far and has been tight-lipped since the issue of the warrants.

The court has adjourned the case till June 17.
