Vijay’s ‘Kaththi’ collects 15.4 crore in the opening day

Acclaimed director A.R. Murugadoos’s much anticipated film ‘Kaththi’ starring Tamil superstar Vijay was released on 22nd October. The critic’s review of the film has been mostly positive and commercially the film has set a new record. On its opening day, the film has collected 15.4 crore at the domestic box office which is a new record for Tamil films.

Trade analysts are expecting that the first weekend collections of the film will also be record setting. This feat is especially impressive as there were no extravagant promotions for the film. Noted trade analyst Trinath told the media, "Braving all the controversy and low-key promotions, 'Kaththi' has registered Rs.15.4 crore at the ticket window on the release day, in the country. The numbers are phenomenal and the film is expected to set new opening weekend box office record." In the film, Vijay plays double roles - one is a crook and the other is a social crusader. In turn of events, the crook takes the place of the crusader and fights for the right of farmers. Samantha Ruth Prabhu plays the female lead and Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh plays the antagonist in the film.

The record collection of the film was possible due to its good performance outside Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka/ Bangalore, the film did record business for a Tamil film. Vijay’s popularity in Bangalore is already being compared to Tamil icon Rajinikanth. Distributer Saurav Sharma said, "The film has shattered all the records of all Tamil actors in Bangalore till date except for a Rajinikanth film. If recent trends are taken into account, Vijay is next only to Rajini. Other actors like Kamal Hasan, Ajith or Suriya are big, but Vijay is ahead of them if one goes by the crowd response." The film has also done well in Kerala. Trade analysts are now eager to calculate the weekend collections of the film.

The film has already garnered praise from notable personalities. Tamil star Dhanuh has tweeted after watching the film, "Kaththi is awesome :) I'm very glad good quality cinema is doing so well. its very healthy. Congrats vijay sir ARM sir and my rockstar Anirudh." Popular VJ and TV personality Bhavna has wrote on her personal blog, "Kaththi: interesting storyline, catchy songs, though slow in places, Vijay has really outdone http://himself.watch it for ilayathalapathy:)" A good word of mouth promotion from the audience is most likely to help the film do even better business in the coming day.
