Vidya Balan to play controversial author Kamala Das


Versatile Vidya Balan who was going slowly on career front has gain speed. She has signed three film this year and just wrapped up Sujoy Ghosh's 'TE3N’. Vidya Balan’s hand are full with three promising projects, 'Kahaani 2’ by Sujoy Ghosh, then the Hindi remake of the Bengali Partition drama, 'Rajkahini,' which will mark National Award winning director Srijit Mukherji's Bollywood debut in which she will enact the role of Begum Jaan, the madam of a brothel, enacted by Rituparna Sengupta in the original and the third one is a biopic on the controversial author Kamala Das.

The biopic will be a Hindi-Malayalam bilingual and will be helmed by Malayalam film-maker Kamal. Kamala Das later became Kamala Surayya. She was a poet, author, columnist who wrote extensively about female sexuality. At the age of 67, she converted to. The film will explore her life story in three parts - the first part will talk about her marriage at the age of 15 to a banker; the second part about her autobiography Ente Katha (My Story); the third part about her conversion to Islam at 67 and traces of her life after that.

Director Kamal was quoted as saying to a leading daily, "Vidya is one of the first few actresses who explored female sexuality unapologetically in films like 'Ishqiya' and 'The Dirty Picture'. She was the perfect choice for the role since the beginning. I first approached her for the Malayalam film but now we will be shooting it as a bilingual, in Malayalam and Hindi simultaneously."

Reportedly,  Vidya Balan already got into preparatory mode and she has already started reading the writer's autobiography and looking for the translated versions of her short stories published in Malayalam.

The film will go on floor by this year end and will be shot in Germany, Spain and France.
