Vidya Balan approached to play Indira Gandhi in biopic

Actress Vidya Balan who had earlier expressed her wish to portray former prime minister Indira Gandhi on the silver screen has been approached by filmmaker Manish Gupta for the role in his biopic on the forme PM.

Manish had approached the ‘Kahaani’ actress three-four months ago about the film. “She liked the script, but hasn’t given a go-ahead yet. Given that the film is on Indira Gandhi, there are precautions needed to be taken before we start,” the filmmaker said.

Before moving ahead with the film, Manish would need to obtain permission from the Gandhi family and the director is working on it. A producer is willing to invest on the project and the script is also ready. Vidya has liked the script and when she gives her nod, the biopic, to be called ‘Indira’ will move to the next level, according to reports.

The biopic will also have other characters like that of the former PM’s sons and Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. However, the ‘Rahasya’ director said he had not approached anyone else yet other than Vidya.

Manish, who began his career as a script writer for ‘Sarkar’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, said the main focus of the film will be on Indira, and the other characters will be cast in supporting roles. “The film will not have any other A-lister,” he said.

“My film will be a tell-all tale about Indira Gandhi — right from her birth to her assassination. It’s the story of her childhood, youth, rise to power as the prime minister of India, her fall to near-oblivion, her comeback as PM, her final battle against extremists and her refusal to discriminate on the lines of faith, that eventually led to her assassination,” a popular daily quoted Manish as saying.

The biopic will not be a typical Bollywood film with peppy songs or item numbers.
