Veteran actress Sumita Sanyal dies at 71 in Kolkata


Veteran actress Sumita Sanyal passed away at the age of 71 at her residence in Kolkata on July 9. She died of heart attack around 10:30 am in the morning. The family of the actress revealed that Sumita Sanyal was suffering from age-old related ailments.

She has starred in many hit movies in Bengali and best known for her role in Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna blockbuster ‘Anand’.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her grief over the demise of the veteran actress. She tweeted #"Saddened at the passing of veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. My condolences to her family, friends and fans."

Noted Bengali actor Prosenjit Chatterjee also condoled the death of Sumita Sanyal, writing: "Saddened to hear about the demise of the veteran actress Sumita Sanyal. May her soul rest in peace." Sunita Sanyal was born on October 9, 1945.

Born as Manjula Sanyal in Darjeeling, Sumita will be best remembered for her portrayal in ‘Nayak’, co-starred Uttam Kumar, Kuheli, Teen Bhubhaner Parey, Apanjan and Deya Neya are some of her best movies.

She also shared screen space with Saira Banu and Dilip Kumar in 1970 Bengali film Sagina Mahato. In Hindi, Sumita Sanyal featured in movies like Guddi, Mere Apne, Nayak, Aashirwad and Anand. 

Married to film editor Subodh Roy, Sumita Sanyal is survived by her son.
