Veteran actress Shyama passes away at 82


Yesteryear actress Shyama died on Tuesday morning at her residence in Mumbai. She was 82. Her daughter Shirin confirmed the news of her death to a leading newspaper. Throwing light on her mother’s health, Shirin said that Shyama was suffering from lung infection and her health worsened for the past few days. the cremation of the actress took place at 2:0 pm at Marine Lines in Mumbai today.

Speaking to Mid-Day, actor Johnny Walker’s son Nasir Khan said, “It’s really disheartening to know about the demise of Shyama aunty. She had done several films with my father and in a lot of them she was opposite him also. In fact, in the film that was made on his name ‘Johnny Walker’, she was the heroine with him. My heartfelt condolences to the family and may Allah give her the strength through this trying time.”

In her 40 years career, Shyama worked in movies like Sawan Bhado, Milan and Sharada. She acted in over 175 movies and also won the Filmfare Award Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Sharada.

The actress will be remembered for her role in Aar Paar, Barsaat Ki Raat, Bhadi ad many more. Born as Khurshid Akhtar, Shayam was given her the stage name by director Vijay Bhatt. Shyama got married to cinematographer Fali Mistry in 1953. The couple had three children, including two sons – Faroukh and Rohin and daughter Shirin.
