Vinod Khanna passes away at 70 amidst reports of cancer


Veteran actor Vinod Khanna, who has been ailing for quite some time, passed away on Thursday morning (April 27). He was 70. The actor is survived by his wife Kavita Khanna and four children - Rahul Khanna, Akshaye Khanna, Sakshi Khanna and Shraddha Khanna.

Vinod Khanna breathed his last at the Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre in Girgaon, Mumbai, where he was admitted on March 31. His elder son Rahul Khanna had stated that the actor was suffering from “severe dehydration” and that the situation was quickly brought under control.

However, a picture of Vinod Khanna looking very frail went viral, which sparked reports that the actor was undergoing treatment for bladded cancer. However, his younger son Akshaye Khanna later told an entertainment portal, that his father was doing well.

Vinod Khanna, one of the most handsome actors of his time, made his debut in 1968 with a negative role in Sunil Dutt’s ‘Man Ka Meet’. He continued to play villains in movies like ‘Purab Aur Paschim’, ‘Sachaa Jhutha’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, and ‘Mastana’. He debuted as a leading man with the 1971 movie ‘Hum Tum Aur Who’ and went on to feature in blockbusters like ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ and ‘Qurbaani’

Khanna left the industry when he was at the peak of his career to follow the spiritual guru Osho Rajneesh. He made a comeback in 1987 and continued to play leading roles in a few movies. He later transitioned to supporting roles in the 1990s. Later, he went on to work with Salman Khan in movies like ‘Wanted’, ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Dabangg 2’, and was last seen in Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Dilwale’. He also porayed into politics and was a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party member of the Lok Sabha from Punjab’s Gurdaspur constituency.
