Unheard love story of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor

Sridevi doesn’t need any introduction. Her name itself is enough to speak about her achievement and her enduring contribution to the Hindi film industry. She is a successful Bollywood actress and a complete homemaker. Unlike her contemporaries, she rarely made news during her heydays about her personal affair. Slowly, her producer and life partner Boney Kapoor won her heart and both tied the knot in a private ceremony in 1996.

Boney developed a special feeling for Sridevi before he signed her for ‘Mr India’. One day, he took courage and proposed her and Sri accepted.

Listen to Sri-Boney’s love story in Sridevi’s word."Boney came to me in 1984 to sign me to play Seema, the lead female role for Mr India. He confessed later, that he fell in love with me outright! He however did take a few years to sort out his life before formally proposing to me in 1993. I fell in love with him when I got to know the real him. It was difficult, traumatic even and it took me many years to finally accept the fact that I was destined to be with Boney. In hindsight, I only wish that I had realized and accepted his love for me sooner. I always believe in following my heart and I am glad that I did. My parents had passed away by then and my sister was shocked with my decision. But now, she shares a great relationship with my husband and is convinced that he is the best thing that ever happened to me!"

Even after so many years of togetherness, Boney Kapoor and Sridevi are strongly bonded. Boney confessed that it was a love at first sight. “I fell in love with Sri when I watched her Tamil film during the late 1970s. After watching her film, I wanted to know more about her,” Boney Kapoor told reporters while sharing the inside story, which the couple kept under wraps for so many years, much to the embarrassment of his wife. “I had especially gone to Chennai at her house to meet her, but she was shooting in Singapore. I returned to Mumbai disheartened,” he added.

Sridevi tried to stop him from revealing more details but he continued: “After some time, I watched Sri’s Solva Sawan (1979). I desperately wanted to meet her. I wanted her to work with me. One day I went to meet her on the set (of a movie). Sri is an introvert. She doesn’t talk to strangers. She talked to me in half broken English and Hindi and just said that her mother takes care of her professional matters.”

When he signed her for ‘Mr India’, her mother asked Boney for Rs 10 lakh to sign the film. “When she asked for Rs 10 lakh, I offered her Rs 11 lakh because I wanted to be close to Sri. Her mother was completely impressed with me. Sri was the highest paid actresses of that time and she later confessed to me that she thought I was a crazy producer who was offering more than what she had asked for,” said Boney Kapoor.

Boney made her feel comfortable on the set, “I made sure she was comfortable on the set (of Mr India). I personally took care of everything. There were no vanity vans at that time, but I arranged for a separate make-up room for her. Gradually, she felt comfortable with me.”

Boney was so madly in love with her that when Sridevi was filming Chandni in Switzerland, he had gone to Switzerland especially to see her “because I wanted to be close to her”.

“After coming back, I told my first wife (Mona Shourie) what I had felt for Sri,” he said and added when Sridevi’s mother died, “I was there with her all the time. When she finished shooting for Lamhe, her father passed away. We came close to each other slowly. I supported her throughout. Even she was there for me always. She is not only a talented actress, but a fabulous wife and mother. She still lives in her own world and doesn’t get into controversies. Even after so many years of our marriage, I am still madly in love with her.”
