Singer Kousalya files harassment case against husband

Popular playback singer of South Indian cinema Kousalya on Tuesday lodged a complaint against her husband alleging domestic harassment, at the Senjeeva Reddy Nagar police station, Hyderabad.

In her complaint, Kousalya alleged that her husband Balasubramanyan has been torturing her mentally and physically for more than a year. She has also accused him of abusing her.

Based on her complaint, police registered a case against the singer’s husband under Section 506 and Section 507 of the Indian Penal Code and started investigation.

This is the second time that the singer had complained against her husband on the same issue. Earlier, a case was booked under section 498 A of IPC at the same police station, but the case was hushed up after the couple was given counselling thrice.

Things seemed to be okay for a while, but Balasubramanyam again started to abuse and harass her, which led Kousalya to register a complaint once again.

Meanwhile, Balasubramanyam has claimed innocence and rubbished the allegations, saying his wife is trying to damage his reputation with false accusations.

Incidentally, Kousalya and Balasubramanyam have been childhood friends. They got married after a few years of courtship. The couple has a son.

Kousalya hails from Nizampatnam in Guntur district. She did her schooling from St Joseph's school in Nagarjuna Sagar and graduated in music from Guntur women's college. She has also received her PF in classical music from Sri Padmavathi University.

She debuted as a playback singer in 1999 with the film ‘Nee Kosam’ and has sung for more than 400 songs in Telugu, Tamil and Kannada films.  She has worked with several famous musicians and singers down the south, including S.P. Balasubramaniam, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Shaan, and Mano.

She has also bagged several awards, including the Nandi Award. She is currently  appearing on MAA TV's ‘Super Singer 9’ as a team lead.
