Telugu director Dasari Sairam arrested
A Telugu film director has been arrested for allegedly hurting religious sentiments. Special Operation Team of Rachakonda Police Commissionerate apprehended Dasari Sairam from Film Nagar in Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad, a PTI report stated citing police sources.
Dasari Sairam’s upcoming film ‘Devudu’ (meaning ‘Oh God’) has some scenes of whiskey being poured over a Shiva Lingam in a temple and cigarettes burning in place of agarbattis.
According to police, Bajrang Dal leader U Naveen lodged a complaint against Dasari Sairam and ‘Devudu’ producer Gajjela Hari Kumar Reddy. While the director has been nabbed, the producer is absconding.
Police have filed the complaint under IPC Sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class), 298 (uttering, words, etc., with deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings of any person), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion).
Dasari Sairam, who has previously directed ‘Lottery’ and ‘Mitravinda’, is said to have told the police that he was inspired by visuals he saw on television, where devotees offer whiskey and cigarettes to Lord Shiva temples in Karnataka and Ujjain.
The teaser of ‘Devuda’ was released on YouTube on January 1, 2017 and was viewed at least 13,747 times as of Thursday noon. The clipping was taken out after police brought the matter to the notice of YouTube management.
