Suchitra Sen’s medical condition stabilizes

The veteran Bengali actress of the yesteryear Suchitra Sen was admitted to one of Kolkata’s leading hospital on 23rd December 2013 due to an infection in the respiratory tract. The 82 year old has partially responded to the non invasive ventilation system and her blood pressure and heart rate has been stable. A medical bulletin published by the Belle Vue clinic stated that, “However, her oxygen saturation needs continuous monitoring. Her heart rate and blood pressure continues to remain stable.”

Dr Subrata Maitra who is the head of a 6 member medical team, treating Suchitra Sen states that, "Even though her cardiac function, pulse rate and blood pressure remain normal, the lung congestion persists. Antibiotics and steroids have not had the desired effect. The congestion has dissolved partially, but it's still there. She will be under observation for we still can't rule out a recurrence of the breathlessness episodes."

Speaking about the condition of the patient, the CEO of Belle Vue Pradip Tandon said that, "She has improved marginally ever since we started using the noninvasive ventilator. But her food intake is limited and she has been on antibiotics for nearly two weeks now. So, she is very weak."

Suchitra Sen did memorable roles in the Bengali movies, 'Saat Paake Bandha', 'Saptopadi', 'Agnipariksha' and 'Deep Jele Jai'. She also acted in a few Hindi movies. Her performance in the Bollywood movies 'Aandhi' and ‘Devdas’ are legendary.  She is also the first Indian actress to win the award for best actress at the Film festival in Moscow.

She is the mother of actress Moon moon Sen and grandmother of Actresses Riya Sen and Raima Sen. Suchitra Sen removed herself from public appearances in the year 1978 and for the past three decades she was never seen in public.

The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee went to Belle Vue clinic on Friday to enquire about her health but didn’t meet her in person as it is well known that the actress does not feel comfortable to meet anyone outside the family. Once Suchitra Sen heard of the CM’s visit she expressed her desire to meet her in person and conveyed the message to Mamta through Dr Subrata Maitra.

Mamta Responded and met her on Sunday. Later on the CM wrote in her Facebook account about the meeting as, "Everyone knows she has kept herself away from public view for more than 30 years. I am undoubtedly fortunate enough to get an opportunity to meet her in person. I am overwhelmed and proud to meet the legendary actress ... I find that she is improving gradually. Let us all pray to God for her early recovery and good health."
