Suchitra Sen passes away at 82

Legendary Bengali actress Suchitra Sen who was admitted at Belle Vue hospital in Kolkata for quite sometime breathed her last on Friday morning. She was 82. Neither the doctors or the hospital authorities revealed the exact time of her death. She is said to have suffered a massive heart attack.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee rushed to the hospital on hearing the news of her death.

"An era has ended," remarked veteran actress and film director Aparna Sen. Her death shattered the Bengali film industry. Over a span of fifties to seventies, Suchitra Sen dominated the Bengali film industry. Her most successful combination was with Bengali superstar Uttam Kumar.

"Her death marks a great loss to Bengali films. I pray so that her family can overcome the grief," said Biswajit Chatterjee, himself a star of Bengali films and a contemporary of Sen.

"None had the ability to step in her shoes," commented veteran actor Dipankar Dey.

"Her works will live with us forever," said Madhabi Mukherjee, one of the finest actresses of Bengali films and a favourite of Satyajit Ray.

Sen, 82 is survived by her daughter Munmum Sen and two granddaughters, Raima and Riya Sen. She was diagnosed with severe lung infection and since 23rd December she was admitted to Belle Vue hospital and over these days, her heath condition kept on fluctuating. After retirement, she confired herself to the four walls of the house and did not meet any outsiders.
