Sonam, Vidya donned nose ring at Cannes

The International Film Festival at Cannes is celebrating 100 years of Indian cinema this year. So, the Indian theme was expected to be emphasized. A number of eminent film personalities are walking the red carpet this year. The Bollywood actresses have gone all out desito mark the festival with an Indian flavor t his year. The saree, lehenga, bindi and the maang tika have become well known in the western world and has been flaunted at Cannes before now. This year, joining their distinguished rank is the nath or the nose ring of purely Indian design. Bollywood divas, Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor walked the red carpet attired in Indian outfit from head to toe including the nath that set them apart.

Back in 2005, it was Nandita Das who first introduced the traditional Indian look to the world as she walked the red carpet in a plain red silk saree, a choker necklace, a maang tika and a gajra. Since then, the desi style has taken off in the international arena. Since the 66thfestival is paying a special tribute to the 100 years of Indian cinema this year, we expected all the actresses to stress the desi style. And that did turn out to be the case.

Vidya Balan has fallen in the black book of the fashion police more than once, but at Cannes, she carried off her flawless Indian look with style. She had relied on her favorite designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee for her looks. He chose to drape her in a peach sari with a red blouse. The ensemble was complimented by a golden nath which made a powerful fashion statement. Earlier, Vidya had arrived at the festival in a black and red lehenga with the antique jhumkas designed by Amrapali jewels which tinkled seductively with every step she took. Her simple hairstyle with hair parted in the middle and tied tightly in a bun helped to complete her Indian look. Vidya is a part of a prestigious jury at Cannes headed by Spielberg.

Sonam Kapoor is making a name in Bollywood for her flawless sense of fashion. This year, she too decided to go fully Indian. She was dressed in a plain white lace saree designed by Anamika Khanna, complemented by a long gold embroidered jacket. The look was completed by the pearl nosering which gave a desi flavor to the look. Sonam is the brand ambassador of L'Oreal.
