Sonam Kapoor’s ‘Veere Di Wedding’ title to be changed?

Sonam Kapoor and sister Rhea Kapoor’s upcoming chick flick ‘Veere Di Wedding’ might have to change its title, as another movie by the same name has already completed half of its shooting.

The movie, starring Sonam, Kareena Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania, was originally slated to begin shooting in mid-2016, but was delayed after its co-producer backed out and also due to Kareena’s pregnancy. It was decided that the movie will go on floors in May this year, but looks like the makers are facing another challenge.

Another film with an identical title, ‘Veerey Ki Wedding’, starring Jimmy Shergill and debutante Diljott, have already finished 50 per cent of its shooting in the meantime. And the stark similarity in the titles has bothered the Kapoors, who claim to have registered the title first.

Papa Anil Kapoor has come to the rescue of his daughters’ project and has shot off a letter to the Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPAA), urging for its intervention in the matter. On the other hand, ‘Veerey Ki Wedding’ director Ashu Trikha said that they had acquired a copyright and trademark for the title, apart from registering it with IMPAA, Indian Film and TV Producers Council.

According to Ashu, Bollywood film producers are associated with different trade associations, all among which are helmed by the Film Makers Combine, which takes the final decision. "The association suggests that a trademark supersedes any other registration. Legally, we have supported our title with everything,” Mid-day quoted the director as saying. He added, “Shooting for the songs, including the title track of the romantic-actioner, is complete. Following a packed schedule next week, 80 per cent of the film will be ready."

Film’s co-producer Chandan Bakshi says that though IMPAA had initially asked them to change the title, they gave the team a green signal after learning of the trademark and that a major part of the film had been shot.

A senior member of IMPAA said, “Anil will have to choose a new title, since shooting is yet to commence for his film. That's the only way out.”
