Singer Atif Aslam gets threats from Shiv Sena

Atif Aslam’s show at Hadapsar in Pune has been cancelled due to strong opposition and threats from the extremist political outfit Shiv Sena. The musical fest organized by Anjaneya Sathe Group was scheduled to be held on April 25 at Amanora Park Town. Sanjay Sathe, the organizer has confirmed the cancellation.

"We are from the field of arts, we wanted to do it, but then the intention behind the cancelation is totally appropriate. So we shall always remain patriotic. As Balasaheb has said 'Be patriotic and put the nation first', and thereby, at the larger level we had to cancel the show." Sanjay told NDTV.

Mahadev Babar, an ex-MLA from Hadapsar had written a complaint to the Pune Police Commissioner against the show. His letter made stern objections against allowing a Pakistani singer to perform on Indian soil.

“Our border is not safe anymore due to continuous firing from the Pakistani side." the letter read. The political party founded by Bal Keshav Thackeray is known for its strong stand against permitting foreign nationals chiefly a Pakistani to perform in India owing to ceasefire violations along the Line of Control.

“The neighboring country is sending terrorists to India, blasting bombs, attacking our Parliament, then how do we welcome their artistes,”  Adesh Bandekar, Chitrapat Sena leader told Asian Age.

Even in the past Shiv Sena had threatened the participation of Pakistani Television host and cross-dresser Begum Nawazish Ali and Pakistani actress Veena Malik from participating in the popular reality show Big Boss in 2010. They had threatened a live performance at Mumbai Press Club featuring Gulam Ali and Meekal Husan Band with dire consequences. In 2013 the party which has often called Indian Muslims “anti-nationals” threatened Pakistani athletes from taking part in Indian Hockey League. Recently in 2014 they disrupted a Delhi show featuring a Sindhi Sufi singer.

The Pakistani singer has a huge fan base in both Pakistan and India. He has lent his voice to many popular Bollywood songs. He also adjudicated a reality show in India besides holding several concerts here. His next show in India is scheduled to be held in Ahmadabad on May 10, 2015. The organizers said that around 1000 tickets have already been sold for the show. But now that the show has been officially canceled, the organizers have promised to refund the money paid for the tickets bought.
