Shah Rukh Khan – The King of Romance turns 50

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan began his acting career from the small screen and went on to be the ‘Badshah’ of Bollywood. Shah Rukh has acted in over 80 Hindi films in genres ranging from romantic dramas to action thrillers. Although he started off as a villain, he was loved for the romantic roles he played on the silver screen. He is one of the most loved romantic heroes of the Hindi film industry and is aptly called the ‘King of Romance’. With eight Filmfare Best Actor Awards under his belt, Shah Rukh is the most-awarded Bollywood actor, tied only with Dilip Kumar.

As King Khan turns 50 on Monday, let’s check out his top five romantic movies.

Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ created history and was declared an all-time blockbuster and it remains as the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema. Shah Rukh plays the role of Raj Malhotra who falls in love with Kajol’s Simran during a trip to Switzerland. But Simran’s conservative father wants to get her married to his friend’s son in India. Shah Rukh and Kajol were at their romantic best in the film.

Dil To Pagal Hai (1997)
The film had a tagline: ‘Someone somewhere is made for you...’ The film depicted the love story of dancers in a musical dance troupe. Shah Rukh played the role of Rahul, the director of the troupe. He creates a musical ‘Maya’, an imaginary girl who believes in true love, with his friend Nisha who secretly loves him, but falls in love with another girl Pooja. Karishma Kapoor played the role of Nisha while Madhuri Dixit played Pooja.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

The film is Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol's fourth film together. Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee played the role of college buddies Rahul, Anjali and Tina respectively. Anjali loves Rahul, but before she could tell him, he reveals his love for Tina and marries her. Tina dies after giving birth to a daughter who years later, reunites her father with Anjali. Rahul too meanwhile realises that he actually loved Anjali and Tina was only an infatuation.

Chalte Chalte (2003)

The film depicted the love story of a couple who came from different economic and social backgrounds. Shah Rukh Khan played the role of Raj Mathur who owns a small transport company founded by himself. Rani Mukherjee plays the role of Priya, a fashion designer from a wealthy family. They fall in love and get married but lose each other due to their differences.

Veer-Zaara (2004).

The film is a cross-border love story between Shah Rukh Khan’s Veer Pratap Singh, an Indian air-force officer and Zaara Hayaat Khan (Preity Zinta), a Pakistani. Veer willingly undergoes a life sentence in a Pakistani jail to save the honour of his beloved, while everyone believes that he is dead. Meanwhile, Zaara fulfils the wish of Veer’s parents.
