Shahrukh Khan’s security beefed-up for ‘Raees’ in Gujarat

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan who is currently shooting for his forthcoming film ‘Raees’ in Gujarat, has been provided with extra security cover by the state police. The move comes after two incidents of demonstrations against the actor took place in the past fortnight.

According to a report in The Times of India, senior police officials of the state have directed respective district and city police chiefs to review the situation and provide adequate security cover at places of shooting and hotels where the cast and crew have put up.

Over 150 personnel, including a deputy superintendent of police, two inspectors and 10 sub-inspectors were deployed on Monday when the ‘Raees’ crew went to Adalaj stepwell for shooting. "Security of the actor and the film crew has been reviewed and police deployment has been increased for the future instances as well," Gandhinagar police commissioner Shivanand Jha was quoted by the report.

On Sunday, February 14, some youths, apparently belonging to Vishwa Hindu Parishad, hurled stones at the hotel where Shah Rukh and other cast and crew of the film were staying. A car used by the film’s crew was damaged in the incident in Ahmedabad.

Earlier this month a group of youths – some wearing saffron scarves, demonstrated against the actor in Bhuj who had arrived in Kutch for the shooting. The activists of the right-wing organisation were protesting against Shah Rukh for his remarks portraying the nation as intolerant. They hurled shoes at his posters and burnt them. The protesters also staged demonstrations in front of the district collector office and submitted memorandum demanding cancellation of permission to shoot the movie in Kutch.

‘Raees’ is a crime-thriller set in 1980s Gujarat and narrates the story of a bootlegger whose illegal business is eventually thwarted by a tough police man. The film is loosely based on the life of Ahmedabad-based don Abdul Latif.

The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pakistani actress Mahira Khan who is making her Bollywood debut with the film.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, the film is schedules to release in July on the occasion of Eid.
