Sanjay Dutt to be taken to Yerwada jail, Pune today

Sanjay Dutt surrendered to the TADA court and today he is to be taken to the Yerwada jail in Pune where the actor will serve out his 42 month long jail sentence.

Dutt had been arrested for keeping a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle in a notified area during the infamous Mumbai blasts of 1993. He was acquitted of the charges under TADA, but he was found guilty under the Arms Act. He was sentenced to a jail term of six years. Later, on his appeal, the term was reduced to five years. Dutt has already spent one and a half years in prison and 42 months of his sentence remains to be carried out. The court had directed him to surrender last month and the deadline was later extended by another four weeks on humanitarian grounds. After the final petition was rejected, dutt decided to surrender at the TADA court in Mumbai. Last night, he had approached his friends Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn to look after his wife Manyata and three kids and help Manyata in looking after his Production house. People like Ranbir Kapoor, David Dhawan, Fardeen Khan etc visited him at home on the eve of his surrender.

Finally, yesterday afternoon, Dutt drove to the TADA court in South Mumbai accompanied by wife Manyata, sister and Congress MP, Priya and brother in law Owen Roncon. A number of formalities were completed which took several hours. The court allowed him access to home food and medicines. He was also allowed to carry his toiletries including toothpaste, shampoo, mosquito repellant, slipper, kurta and pyjama. He requested to be allowed to carry his electronic cigarette. He is a chain smoker. However, Judge G. A. Sanap denied this request, saying that he should try to quit smoking instead. Dutt was also allowed to take copies of Bhagwat Geeta, Hanuman Chalisa and the Ramayan.

Dutt was put in the Arthur Road jail from where he will be shifted to the Yerawada jail in Pune today. Since Dutt has stated that he feared for his life from fundamentalist sections, arrangements for security are being made. However, apart from security, no other special arrangement is made for the celebrity convict. Dutt will be kept separate from the criminal elements. Sources said that he will probably be kept in an Anda cell, an egg shaped cell, half buried in ground which is the most secure cell in the jail.
