Sanjay Dutt seeks 14 days furlough

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been incarcerated in the Yerawada jail in Pune for 42 months – the remainder of his five year jail term. According to reports, the actor has sought fourteen days furlough from the jail authorities.

Sanjay Dutt was arrested under the Arms Act in relation to the Mumbai bomb blast case in 1993 for the possession of illegal arms and was convicted by the Supreme Court in March 2013. At present he is serving out the last remaining 42 months of his sentence at the Pune jail.

However, from the beginning he has been granted leaves and parole repeatedly. Soon after his imprisonment, Dutt was granted leave for fourteen days on medical grounds in October 2013. It was later extended for another fourteen days. Again, the actor got a month long leave from jail when his wife Manyata fell sick and he had to look after his two kids. This leave was given in December but was extended by another thirty days in January due to continuing poor health of Manyata.

It has now been reported that Sanjay has again applied for a fourteen day furlough, to the jail authorities. A furlough is a leave of absence which can be granted by the jail authorities without going to court. It is extendable by another fortnight. It is said that the actor is suffering from a blood clot in his leg and has asked for the furlough, in order to seek proper treatment for it.

Sanjay was seen in ‘Ungli’ which was released last week and will next be seen on the silver screen in ‘PK’ by Rajkumar Hirani which is scheduled to be released on 19th December. In addition to Sanjay, the film will star Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput and has already attracted a lot of attention.

According to a source close to Dutt, "He has submitted his application and is awaiting its acceptance." Though the application is on medical grounds, Dutt will probably participate in the promotion of ‘PK’ if granted leave. Meanwhile, controversy has already been sparked off due to the large number of bails and leaves being granted to the actor since his imprisonment. It was being said that he is getting preferential treatment. So, it remains to be seen whether the Yerawada jail authorities grant this fresh application of 14 days furlough submitted by the 55 year old actor.
