Salman – the face of ‘Being Human’ and the Bolly brat

Salman Khan, whose mere presence in a movie is sufficient to make it click, has obtained suspension of his five-year jail term from the Bombay High Court in the 2008 hit-and-run case. The Dabangg star is out on bail now but, many aren’t happy with the court’s decision. This has added one more controversy to his long list of controversies in his off-screen life.

Salman has made a name in Bollywood with his slew of successful movies ranging from ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, ‘Saajan’ to ‘Hum Aapke Hai Kaun’, ‘Karan Arjun’, ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ and the list goes on... The actor also set up a charitable trust Being Human Foundation for the cause of underprivileged and the NGO Being Human which sells T-shirts and other merchandise. But his philanthropic ventures did little to attenuate his controversy kid image in real life. As filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, aptly remarks, “... And his this ‘larger-than-life’ persona is the sum total of his past - the bad boy of Bollywood who reinvented himself as the face of Being Human - the transformation is as filmi as it can get.”

Salman might have procured bail in the 2002 hit-and-run case, but he is still embroiled in an older case. Three cases, including one under the Arms Act, were registered against the actor, who was accused of poaching three chinkaras and a black buck near Jodhpur in 1998, during the shooting of ‘Hum Saath Saath Hai’. They are still running at a Jodhpur court.

The actor has courted controversies due to his string of girlfriends and mentoring newcomer heroines. He is known to have dated Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif and also Sangeeta Bijlani and Somy Ali. Aishwarya look-alike Sneha Ullal of the forgettable 2005 film ‘Lucky’, and Katrina look-alike Zarine Khan, who debuted in ‘Veer’ (2010), were his finds.

After his break up with Aishwarya, he had harassed her on the sets of ‘Kuch Na Kaho’ in 2002 and reportedly pushed her and banged her car. In 2003 when Aishwarya was romantically involved with her ‘Kyun...Ho Gaya Na’ co-star Vivek Oberoi, the latter held a press meet and announced that Salman had abused him and threatened to kill him.

Salman had a spat with actor Shahrukh Khan at his then girlfriend Katrina’s birthday party in 2008, and in2009, buzz was that he threw Katrina’s belongings out of his house after an argument with her. Thereafter, rumours spread that the two were drifting apart, and in 2011, Katrina cleared the air saying their relationship ended in 2010.

The actor is known for his starry tantrums and moody temperament. During the shooting of ‘Jai Ho’ he took the camera from a photographer’s hands and got all his pictures deleted, snatched a fan’s phone and threw it for taking his pictures and slapped his bodyguard for accidentally hitting a fan while protecting the actor from the crowd. He also abused a reporter for pestering him with questions about Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina after the couple’s Ibiza vacation pictures were leaked in 2013.

He also invited criticism for his comments about the 26/11 Mumbai terror strike and courting politicians, especially when he campaigned for Mahinda Rajapakse during the presidential elections in Sri Lanka.

Lately, in April 2015, an anti-corruption activist accused Salman of abusing and assaulting him, and snatching his papers on a flight, following which a Mumbai court asked the Airport Police to lodge an FIR against the actor.

His list of controversies may be unending, but he has found support from his colleagues in the industry. Actor Anupam Kher for one, who said about him: “People evolve, people change, people see life, and the kind of humanitarian work he is doing, I pray he is happy.”
