Salman Khan tops the 2014 Forbes India Celebrity 100 list

The Forbes list for top 100 celebrities in India, computed on the basis of income and exposure on print, television and social media, had been topped continuously by Shahrukh Khan. However, the 2014 list showed a definite break in the trend. Salman Khan now occupies the top slot with an earning of Rs 244.5 crores followed by Amitabh Bachchan with Rs 196 crores and more than 12 million Twitter following. Shahrukh has been pushed down to the third position with an earning of Rs 202 crores, most of it through endorsements. The period from 1st October, 2013 to 30th September, 2014 was considered.

While Shahrukh had no major film release during this period, Salman garnered huge exposure through his Bollywood hits, his show ‘Bigg Boss’ and his charitable organization, ‘Being Human’. In spite of the court case involving the star, he has managed to grab the top slot in the list.

The second position is occupied by Amitabh Bachchan mostly because of his huge popularity and enduring presence in the social media. Shahrukh had slid down to third position because of the reduction of his fame on various public media. Other important celebrities appearing within the top ten slots in the list include Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan, Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar and Hrithik Roshan. Deepika Padukone is the only woman within the top ten and she has replaced Katrina Kaif. It is estimated that the top five celebrities accounts for more than 35% of the total income of all the 100 celebrities.

Apart from Salman replacing Shahrukh, several other important features can be noticed about the top 100 celebrity list. The number of women has increased from 21 to 28. Several new names have been included in the list. Preity Zinta makes a rather unexpected entry. Though she had no films, her confrontations with Ness Wadia and notable performance of her cricket team Punjab XI allowed her to make the list.

Other new entrants include Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Rajinikanth and his son- in- law Dhanush, singer Arijit Singh and cricketer Ajinkya Rahane. On the other hand, there are ten people who returned to this list. They include Sunny Leone, Imtiaz Ali, Mary Kom etc. Jiv Milkha Singh, Emran Hasmi, Pritam, Sajid Khan and Amit Trivedi lost their previous position. Comedian Kapil Sharma, Yo Yo Honey Singh and Mika Singh have climbed up several steps in the list.
