Salman Khan to pay 55 crore to distributors for ‘Tubelight’ losses

Salman Khan’s Eid release ‘Tubelight’ failed to do great business at the box-office and the superstar has taken the responsibility of refunding the losses suffered by distributors. Several distributors apparently met Salman, also a producer of the film, and the actor has assured them of compensating.

Salman’s father, veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan told a Mid-day report, “When a distributor suffers a loss, the producer needs to show some responsibility and share the burden. We, too, have done the same thing. We met a few of them and are trying to find a middle ground. We will pay back the distributors."

Trade analyst Komal Nahata also confirmed about the development on his Twitter handle. He wrote, “SalmanKhan has agreed to refund monies to distributors to make up for losses in Tubelight. A lovely gesture. That’s being human!”

Reportedly, Salman and his family has agreed to pay Rs 55 crore to the distributors. The movie has so far made Rs 114.50 crore net at the domestic box-office. However, no official data regarding the exact figure is available.

‘Tubelight’, a war-drama directed by Kabir Khan, is set against the backdrop of 1962 India-China War with Salman essaying the role of a man-child who goes on a quest to find his missing brother played by his real brother Sohail Khan. The movie also starred Chinese actress Zhu Zhu and child actor from Arunachal Pradesh, Matin Ray Tangu, besides late actor Om Puri and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub. The film also had a special appearance by Shah Rukh Khan in the role of magician Gogo Pasha.

The film hit theatres on June 23 amidst a great hype, but unfortunately couldn’t live up to it. However, Salman wasn’t unhappy with the reviews saying, ““The critics were like really good. I was expecting minus 3 and minus 4 and they gave me 1 and 2, apparently. So, I am very pleased with that.”

Salman further added, “What happens with a film like this… It’s an Eid release and it has been seen in recent years that there will be song-and-dance so, they went expecting that kind of film but got to see something else. So, now this film is not supposed to be seen with buddies and the thought ‘let’s have fun’. It’s a very emotional film. Howsoever cold-hearted, emotionless a person is, he or she will get teary-eyed after watching the film. This is that kind of a film, where you need to take your parents, grandparents and families.”
