‘Sadma’ director Balu Mahendra dies, Sridevi mourns

One of the most versatile filmmakers of South Balu Mahendra passed away following a severe heart attack at a Chennai hospital at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife and a son. The director is known for his trademark movie, ‘Sadma’ starring Sridevi and Kamal Hassan which is Hindi remake od Tamil grosser ‘Moondram Pirai’. He received high appreciation for his trademark work. Sridevi mourns the death of Balu Mahendra.

On Twitter, Sridevi Kapoor wrote, "Deeply saddened on the demise of Balu Mahendra.The legacy of his creations Sadma & Moondaram Pirai will live on.My condolences to the family."

He made his directional debut with Kannada film, ‘Kokilla’ in 1977. He directed movies in every language down south, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. He won national award for his movies 'Veedu' (1988) and 'Vanna Vanna Pookkal' (1992) Tamil, and his Tamil film 'Sandhya Raagam' (1990) won the award for best film on family welfare

Born on May 20 1939, Balu Mahendra started his career as a cinematographer and later went onto direct some outstanding movies including the award winning ‘Moondram Pirai’ and ‘Veedu’.

His latest directorial venture is ‘Thalai Muraigal’ which depicts the relationship between a grand-father and his grandson, in which he potrayed the role of a protagonist.

Balu Mahendra will always be remembered by his masterpieces and trademark style.
