#RIP Khayyam passes away at 92, PM Modi and Lata tweet condolence


Renowned music composer Khayyam passed away at 92. He was keeping unwell for the past 10 days and was admitted at the ICU at Sujay Hospital in suburban Juhu due to lung infection.

“He was admitted to the hospital a few days ago owing to breathing issues and other age-related illnesses. He died at Sujay Hospital at around 9.30pm,” a family friend told PTI.

 ‘Trishul’, ‘Noorie’ and ‘Shola Aur Shabnam’, ‘Kabhi Kabhie’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’ are some of his best work. His non-film songs include Paaon Padun Tore Shyam, Ghazab Kiya Tere Vaade Pe Aitbaar Kiya and Brij Mein Laut Chalo.

Khayyam was a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan.  He was also honoured with the National Award and Filmfare Award.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar expressed condolence over his demise. PM Modi tweets:-

India will remain grateful to Khayyam Sahab for giving us some of the most memorable compositions, which will be remembered forever. He will also be remembered for his humanitarian gestures to support upcoming artists. His demise is extremely saddening.

Lata Mangeshkar wrote, “Mahan sangeetkar Aur bahut nek dil insan Khayyam sahab aaj humare bich nahi rahe. Ye sunkar mujhe itna dukh hua hai jo main bayaa’n nahi kar sakti.Khayyam sahab ke saath sangeet ke ek yug ka anth hua hai.Main unko vinamra shraddhanjali arpan karti hun”.

The last rites of Mohammed Zahur Hashmi will be performed on Tuesday.Khayyam is survived by his singer wife Jagjit Kaur.
