Rest in peace Nani! Priyanka bids teary goodbye to granny

Priyanka Chopra’s maternal grandmother Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri passed away on June 3 and the actress granddaughter of Madhu bade a teary goodbye to her. She passed away in her sleep with her family members by her side.

Akhouri, 94, a freedom fighter, social activist and a former MLA, was laid to rest at the cemetery of a church in Kerala, as per her wish. Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri’s last wish was to lay in rest in her home state, Kerala and accordingly her family flown her body to Kerala.

Priyanka had tweeted, "I will always remember you with that big smile on your face and the shine in your eyes. Rest in".

"Rest in peace Nani", she said in another tweet yesterday. Priyanka also shared a photograph of her grandmother in Instagram.

Priyanka and other family members flown down from Mumbai to Kerala to take part in the funeral.

In a statement, Priyanka said, "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri, our beloved mother and grandmother, freedom fighter, social activist, MLA, amongst other things. She was an amazing woman who lived a full life, filled with purpose and love." 

Priyanka, who is juggling between US and Mumbai was in India for sometime for her work commitments and other things. She called off all her shoots and work commitments to spend time with her family in these moments of sorrow. She even shared a picture of her grandmother’s last moment in Kerala. The actress wrote, “Rest in peace Nani. #Kerala #FinallyBackHome.

She is expected to fly to the US in few days for the second season of her television show ‘Quantico’ and the next schedule of her Hollywood debut, ‘Baywatch’.

Speaking about her maternal grandmother, Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri born as Mary in Kavalappara family at Kumarakom was a nurse in Bihar. She met Dr Akhouri there and got married. She is survived by three daughters (including Priyanka's mother Madhu Chorpa) and a son.
