Real-life murders that found space on celluloid

The Sheena Bora murder case has been hogging headlines for some time now. Former INX Media chief Indrani Mukerjea has been arrested for allegedly planning the murder of her 24-year-old daughter. Shocking revelations are coming out with each passing day and case further delves into mystery. Such bizarre, sensational crimes become fodder for thrillers on celluloid, and this case too has already caught the fancy of filmmakers. Mahesh Bhatt for one said this case had striking similarities with one of his scripts, ‘Ab Raat Guzernewali Hai’.

Many other real-life crimes and murders have made it on the silver screen.

Talvar (2015)

Renowned lyricist-poet Gulzar’s daughter Meghna Gulzar has directed this crime drama which is based on the controversial Arushi Talwar murder case. 14-year-old Arushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj Banjade were found murdered in the Talwar’s Noida residence in May, 2008. Arushi’s dentist parents Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar have been convicted for the double murders, but they have still maintained they are innocent. It is a very obscure case. The film stars Irffan Khan as the investigative officer, while Konkona Sen Sharma and Neeraj Kabi play Arushi’s parents.

Rahasya (2015)

While Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Talvar’ is yet to release, filmmaker Manish Gupta’s ‘Rahasya’ released earlier this year. The film was also loosely based on the Arushi-Hemraj double murder case of 2008. The film starred Ashish Vidyarthi and Tisca Chopra as the murdured-girl’s parents, while Kay Kay Menon played the role of a CBI officer. However, the film didn’t do well and it was also met with criticism from the Talwars.

Shahid (2014)

Filmmaker Hansal Mehta made a biopic on the life of lawyer and human rights activists Shahid Azmi who was assassinated by four gunmen in his Kurla office in Mumbai on February 11, 2010. During the 1990s a teenaged Shahid was arrested during the Bombay Riots. Thereafter he had gone to a militant-training camp in POK, but returned after a brief period. He was, however, arrested again and served seven-years in jail where he also did his studies. He obtained a degree in Law and became a lawyer in 2003. The film cast Rajkumar Rao in the lawyer’s role. The actor won the Best Actor National Film Award for his performance in the film.

No One Killed Jessica (2011)

The film was inspired by the sensational murder of model who was serving as a celebrity bartender at a socialite party on April 30, 1999. She was shot dead by Manu Sharma, son of a wealthy and influential politician when she refused to serve him drinks as it was past midnight. The film was directed by Raj Kumar Gupta and starred Rani Mukherji and Vidya Balan in pivotal roles. The film was a critical as well as commercial success.

Not A Love Story (2011)

This film made by director Ram Gopal Varma was inspired from the gruesome murder of TV executive Neeraj Grover in 2008. Neeraj as a part of his job helped find roles in TV serials to small-time south Indian actress Maria Susairaj. In the process both fell in love and became intimate. ML Jerome Mathew, then naval officer and Maria’s boyfriend discovered this and killed Neeraj in Maria’s rented apartment in Mumbai in May 2008. RGV’s cast Deepak Dobriyal and Mahi Gill in his film ‘Not A Love Story’. The film was shot in mere 20 days.
