Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt pair up for Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Gully Boy’

Ranveer Singh will be starring opposite Alia Bhatt for his upcoming film ‘Gully Boy’, to be directed by Zoya Akhtar. Ranveer and Alia have paired up for a movie for the first time, but the duo has worked together for a series of advertisements for a travel site. Zoya had worked with Ranveer in her 2015 film ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’.

The speculations regarding Alia and Ranveer coming together for the Zoya Akhtar-directorial has been doing the rounds for quite some time now, but nothing was clear as the actors were tight-lipped about it.

The film will be co-produced by Zoya’s recently-launched banner Tiger Baby and her brother Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani’s company Excel Entertainment.

The film is said to be inspired by Internet sensations like Divine and Naezy, who began their journey as ‘gully’ rappers straight from the slums of Mumbai. Rappers Naezy and Divine are famous for their Mumbai anthems ‘Yeh Mera Bombay’ and ‘Mere Gully Mein’. Both of them have even worked with comedy group AIB and Nucleya.

Zoya had earlier talked about the film with a popular new organisation and revealed, “Yes, my next film is inspired by real-life street rappers. I watched these kids on the Net and they just blew my mind. I didn’t know that this kind of music was coming out of the lanes and by-lanes of Mumbai. People are so consumed with listening to just film music that nobody pays attention to some serious talent on the streets. That is how it all started.”

While Ranveer will play the role of one of the rappers, Alia will play his love interest, and the hunt for the second lead is still on. Earlier, Fawad Khan was being considered for the role, but his casting seems to be unlikely now due to the tensed relationship between India and Pakistan. Latest buzz suggest that Farhan Akhtar might be roped in to play the second lead.
