Rani’s purchase of farmland in Shirdi declared illegal

After Amitabh Bachchan got embroiled in a farmland controversy, recently actress Rani Mukherjee too found herself in a similar situation. Rani had purchased a piece of land in Shirdi, however after authorities checked out the matter they discovered that the farmland could not be sold to Rani as she was not a farmer . The matter has been in court and now the court has declared the purchase illegal.
Rani is a staunch devotee of Sai baba and hence visits Shirdi quite often, hence she decided to purchase land in Shirdi, Maharashtra. Rani had purchased the land for around Rs. 33 lakhs in her father Ram Mukherjee’s name. Rani had also paid Rs.1.32 lakhs as stamp duty for the land. However the land is non-transferable as it is farmland and can only be sold to a farmer. When authorities began making inquiries, they found out that it was farmland and hence a notice was sent to Rani. The matter was then taken to court.

A Municipal official also said “the land was originally under the jurisdiction of village panchayat. Today, it comes under the Municipal Corporation. For any construction, permission of Revenue Department is essential, which has not been taken by Rani Mukherjee. Hence, there was no record of her name in this land deal.” However the court has now declared the purchase of Rani’s Shirdi farmland illegal. Rani has also approached Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh for help regarding the land problem that she is facing. However it is not known whether Rani was aware or not if the land could not be sold as it was agricultural land. Rani herself claims that she unaware that the land was farmland and could not be sold to a non-farmer. Meanwhile Rani is basking in the praise that she has received from Madhuri Dixit. The latter claimed that amongst today’s actresses she was very impressed with Rani and does not miss out on any of her films even in the US.
