Rani Mukherjee’s father Ram Mukherjee dies at 84, funeral today

Veteran filmmaker cum scriptwriter Ram Mukherjee, father of noted actress Rani Mukherjee passed away at the age of 84. Ram Mukherjee was not keeping well for quite sometime and died at 4 am today at his residence. His blood pressure dropped suddenly and rushed to the hospital. He will be cremated at 2 pm.

Sharing the news, Krishna Mukherjee was quoted by The Indian Express as saying, "His blood pressure dropped suddenly and he was admitted to Breach Candy hospital where doctors declared him dead at 5 am. He was doing fine earlier and this was sudden."

Ram Mukherjee worked in both Hindi and Bengali cinema. He was one of the founders of Filmalaya Studios in Mumbai. He directed movies like Raktanadir Dhara, Tomar Rakte Amar Sohag, Raktalekha and Ek Bar Mooskura Do to name a few.

He launched his daughter Rani Mukherjee in 1990 film Biyer Phool, which also starred Prosenjit Chatterjee.

Ram Mukherjee helmed films like Hum Hindustani (1960), which starred Sunil Dutt, Joy Mukherjee and Asha Parekh in lead roles, and the Dilip Kumar-Vyjayanthimala starrer Leader (1964). Ram Mukherjee also produced Rani’s debut Hindi film Raja Ki Aayegi Baarat in 1997.

He is survived by wife Krishna Mukherjee, daughter Rani and son Raja.
