Rajinikanth named Film Personality of 2014

The central government has announced that superstar Rajinikanth will be the recipient of the Indian Film Personality of the Year, Centenary Award. The decision was announced by Minister of State, the Information and broadcasting ministry, Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on last Tuesday.

The Tamil film icon will be presented with the honour during the 45th annual International Film Festival of India (IFFI) that is to be held during 20th to 30th November. This year’s event in Goa looks to be a grand affair as two icons of Indian films, Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan will attend the opening ceremony.

The Minister also said in his statement, "IFFI 2014 would provide opportunities to showcase the variety of the festival in its various formats to facilitate co-operation in the film sector."  Rajinikanth was also awarded the Padma Bhushan honour back in 2000. He has also received multiple awards over the years from the Tamil Nadu government. Naturally, the announcement has evoked a great positive reaction from the actor’s fans. Social networking sites were full of congratulatory messages. Actor and Rajinikanth fan, Bobby Simha said, “His contribution to cinema is immense and no amount of awards is enough. This award is a recognition for his pan-Indian popularity.”

Rajinikanth made his debut in 1975 and has delivered countless Tamil hits along with several hits in other languages and Bollywood as well. His upcoming film is ‘Lingaa’ in which he plays dual role and stars opposite Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty. The film is scheduled for release on 12th December, Rajinikanth’s birthday.

Already there is high expectation among fans about the film. The recently released teaser has been well received by viewers. Recently Eros International acquired the worldwide distribution right of ‘Lingaa’. Eros MD Sunil Lulla said, "We are delighted to present and release worldwide superstar Rajinikanth's much anticipated film ' Lingaa'. Audience across the globe keenly await his first live action film after the blockbuster 'Robot'. There is a huge buzz within the consumers trade for the film and we are very excited."

Apart from his films, there is also a lot of speculation about Rajinikanth joining politics because he shares a good rapport with the Prime Minister. The actor has never explicitly expressed his political leanings but is known to lend his support to parties from time to time. The actor has not spoken on the issue yet and only time can tell what will happen.
