Rajesh Khanna’s bungalow to be demolished

The sea side bungalow of Bollywood’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna will soon be demolished as the new owner plans to construct a multi-storey building on the property on Carter Road in Mumbai's suburb Bandra.

Entrepreneur Shashi Kiran Shetty who purchased the bungalow in August 2014 has plans to renew the old building on the 6,500-square-foot property by constructing a three or four storey building in its place.

“We've to redevelop the property since the existing structure is more than 50 years old. The process will start in a couple of months,” said the new owner.

Regarding purchase of the property of the late actor, Shetty said, “The actor's family probably wanted to screen prospective buyers. I was looking for a property, and this one suited my budget. The deal was done directly with the family with a property consultant.”

Without revealing anything about the building plan, he said they may retain the name ‘Aashirwad’, and hoped to move into their house in one and half years.

The eye-catching bungalow was bought by Rajesh Khanna from his fellow actor Rajendra Kumar before he married Dimple Kapadia. Amazingly, the house was originally named ‘Dimple’ before the actor changed it to ‘Aashirwad’. The bungalow proved lucky for the actor as he delivered 15 hits in a row, a record still unbroken. However, his wife Dimple left him within a decade of their marriage and the actor’s last days were spent in loneliness in the bungalow.
