‘Raees’, ‘Baahubali 2’, ‘Tubelight’ and other big releases of 2017
The new year – 2.017’s first major Bollywood film ‘OK Jaanu’ starring Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor released last week, but unfortunately, couldn’t impress audience and critics as its original Tamil version, Mani Ratnam’s blockbuster ‘O Kadal Kanmani’.
However, it’s only the beginning and there are lots of other anticipated, big releases coming up this year.
Shah Rukh Khan-starrer crime drama ‘Raees’ is a highly-awaited movie, and is set to release on January 25. The film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and marks the debut of Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. Sunny Leone also features in a special song, which is a reworked version of the classic ‘Laila O Laila’ from film ‘Qurbani’. Directed by Rahul Dholakia, ‘Raees’ was originally slated to release last year in July.
Locking horns with ‘Raees’ will be Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam’s ‘Kaabil’, which is also slated to release on January 25. Directed by Sanjay Gupta and produced by Rakesh Roshan under his banner Filmkraft, ‘Kaabil’ is a revenge thriller in which the lead pair play a visually impaired couple. Rohit Roy and Ronit Roy feature as antagonists, while the Urvashi Rautela sizzles in a special number ‘Haseeno Ka Deewana’, a recreation of the iconic ‘Saara Zamana’ from Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Yaarana’.
National Award winning filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Rangoon’, starring Shahid Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan and Kangana Ranaut, will be out on February 24. The movie is a love triangle set against the backdrop of World War II. The film’s trailer was released recently and was met with positive response.
Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Jolly LLB 2’, directed by Subhash Kapoor and starring Anu Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla and Huma Qureshi, will hit screens on February 10. The film is a sequel to the 2013 National Award winning courtroom comedy-satire ‘Jolly LLB’ that starred Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani.
Akshay will also be seen in three more films, as the actor announced on new year through social media. He will feature opposite Bhumi Pednekar in ‘Toilet – Ek Prem Katha’, which is based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cleanliness campaign. The film released on June 2. Akshay will also make his Tamil debut as the main antagonist in Rajinikanth starrer ‘2.0’. It is the sequel of 2010 ‘Enthiran’ (Robot) and will hit screens on the occasion of Diwali. Akshay will also feature in R. Balki’s ‘Padman’ alongside Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte, and it will mark the debut of his wife Twinkle Khanna’s production banner Mrs Funnybones Movies. The film is based on the true story of Tamil Nadu-based Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented a low-cost sanitary pad making machine.
‘The Ghazi Attack’ co-produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and A.A. Films of Anil Thadani, is another film to watch out for. Starring Rana Daggubati, Kay Kay Menon, Atul Kulkarni, Taapsee Pannu and late Om Puri, the film is inspired from real incident of Indian Navy’s classified mission in which Pakistani submarine PNS Ghazi, which was on its way to destroy INS Vikrant and conquer Visakhapatnam port, was destructed during the Indo-Pak war of 1971. The film is slated to release on February 17.
Karan Johar’s production ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ was a box-office hit in 2014, and its second installment, ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ is slated to release on March 10. Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, who starred in the 2014 film, will feature in the upcoming film as well.
‘Sarkar 3’, the third instalment of Ram Gopal Verma’s critically acclaimed and commercially successful franchise starring Amitabh Bachchan, will hit screens on March 17. Competing with it will be ‘Begam Jaan’ starring stalwarts like Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah. The historical drama marks the Bollywood debut of National Award winning director Srijit Mukherji, and is an adaption of his own acclaimed Bengali film ‘Rajkahini’.
Ex-lovebirds Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif’s much-delayed film ‘Jagga Jasoos’ will finally hit theatres on April 7. The lead pair started filming for the Anurag Basu directorial when they were together. They completed the shooting after their split, and their fans will be interested to see if their on-screen chemistry changed post their break-up.
The desperately awaited ‘Baahubali: The Conclusion’ will release on April 28, and the nation will finally know why Kattapa killed Baahubali. S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’, starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannah Bhatia, was a grand film with amazing CGI, and the director has promised the sequel to be even grander and better.
Salman Khan will be back with his Eid release ‘Tubelight’ which will hit theatres on June 24. The movie directed by Kabir Khan is set in the backdrop of Sino-Indo War of 1962 and stars Chinese actress Zhu Zhu. But the main attraction is that the movie will mark the big screen reunion of friends-turned-foe-turned-friends Salman and Shah Rukh Khan.
Shah Rukh will return in theatres on August 11 with his ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ co-star Anushka Sharma in Imtiaz Ali’s romantic drama, tentatively titled ‘The Ring’. Reportedly, the film has been titled ‘Rehnuma’, but it is yet to be confirmed officially.
September 29 will see the release of ‘Judwaa 2’, the second instalment of Salman Khan-starrer cult comedy ‘Judwaa’ which released in 1997. David Dhawan, who directed the original, will helm the upcoming flick, which will star his son Varun Dhawan with Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu. Salman will also feature in a cameo in ‘Judwaa 2’.
The fourth instalment of super-hit comedy film franchise ‘Golmaal’ will be out on October 19. Titled ‘Golmaal Again’, the Rohit Shetty directorial will feature its original cast of Ajay Devgn, Tusshar Kapoor and Arshad Warsi, while Parineeti Chopra is the new addition. ‘Golmaal Again’ will clash with Rajinikanth starrer ‘2.0’ with Akshay Kumar as antagonist.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmavati’ will hit screens on November 17. The period will bring back alleged lovers Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, and their director Bhansali together for the third time. ‘Padmavati’ also stars Shahid Kapoor and Aditi Rao Hydari.
The year will end with another big clash between ex-lovers Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Singh. ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ starring Salman Khan and Katrina, which is the sequel of the 2012 blockbuster ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, will release on December 22, and lock horns with Ranbir-starrer Sanjay Dutt biopic being directed by Rajkumar Hirani.
