‘Raabta’ wins plagiarism case as ‘Magadheera’ makers withdraw plea

Sushant Singh Rajput and Kriti Sanon-starrer ‘Raabta’ has won the plagiarism case against ‘Magadheera ’, after the makers of the 2009 Telugu blockbuster on Thursday withdrew their plea seeking a stay on its release.

After a legal battle between both the sides, ‘Raabta’ makers today morning sent a message saying, “RAABTA wins !!!! Magadheera withdraws.” The romantic drama directed by Dinesh Vijan will now hit screens tomorrow, June 9 as per schedule.

‘Magadheera’ producer Allu Arvind of Geetha Arts banner had alleged that the content of ‘Raabta’ was copied from the S.S. Rajamouli directorial that starred Ram Charan Teja and Kajal Aggarwal. The makers moved a civil court in Hyderabad and obtained an injunction notice last month, and the matter was posted for hearing on June 1.

However, the cast and makers of ‘Raabta’ have denied the allegations and have claimed that there was no similarity between the two films whatsoever, apart from the reincarnation bit.

Earlier on Wednesday, ‘Raabta’ makers listed out 100 films with the theme of reincarnation and love stories, along with the entire script, besides a comparative chart showing differences between ‘Raabta’ and ‘Magadheera’, as evidence.

“We filed the entire script of our film along with a comparative chart showing how the two films are completely different in their story, treatment and expression; something that the plaintiff ought to have done in the first place as part of his pleadings to show comparative similarities,” advocate Ankit Relan who represented ‘Raabta’, was quoted by Hindustan Times.

The Indian Express quoted director Dinesh Vijan as saying, “Basically what has happened is, the other party was misguided. When the facts were discussed in court it became clear that the theme of reincarnation has been done a lot of times, and it cannot be copied. A month back when we offered them to watch the film and if they had watched, it would have been a simpler process. They have withdrawn the case, and I am very happy with that.”

‘Raabta’ has been co-produced by Dinesh Vijan, Homi Adajania and Bhushan Kumar under Maddock Films and T-Series.
