Priyanka Chopra’s T-shirt message sparks online row

Actress Priyanka Chopra’s latest cover picture for a travel magazine has kicked up a controversy on social media. The picture has the ‘Quantico’ actress posing in a white sleeveless tank top with the words refugee, immigrant, outsider and traveller.

Priyanka tweeted the cover of Condé Nast Traveller magazine featuring her picture, on Friday, and wrote, “My new cover. Thank you @CNTIndia."

The words ‘refugee’, ‘immigrant’ and ‘outsider’ on the garment are struck off with a red line, while ‘traveller’ isn’t. The message on the tee suggests that Priyanka is a traveller, or it may have other interpretations too; but some of her fans and followers have taken an offence to it and called the actress ‘isensitive’.

A user by the name Hanna (@HannanMust) wrote, [email protected] @CNTIndia r u kidding me PC?! What with this shirt! Insensitive to all ppl suffer around from refugees.. etc. & I'm amazed ppl r applauding u for this. These tags of wars refugees r not for silly magazine marketing.”

Another user wrote, [email protected] being a refugee is NOT a choice, it's a matter of survival. i was already disappointed for her comments abt feminism, now this.”

[email protected] @priyankachopra offensive t-shirt. With 65 million ppl displaced, highest no. since WWII, to pretend as if it's a choice. #nonPC. extremely insensitive in midst of biggest #refugeecrises. All other options listed are forced on people not chosen,” a tweet read.

However, there were others who felt that the message on Priyanka’s T-shirt was misinterpreted and there was nothing offensive or insensitive about it.

"Priyanka's shirt means in an ideal world there would be no refugees, immigrants or outsiders. We'd all be travellers, global citizens," a twitterati wrote.

Another user wrote, "@priyankachopra @CNTIndia such an inspiring Msg on TShirt, I don't understand why people are offended with it? Call them all travelers.”

One user chose to make a tongue-in-cheek remark responding to another person criticising the message, and wrote, “it means that ppl r striking off these ppl & the next will be traveler.”
