Swachh Bharat Abhiyan: Priyanka cleans up Versova slum area

After Bollywood celebs like Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan, it is the Mary Kom actress Priyanka Chopra who took active steps to respond to the call for Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was nominated for the purpose by the PM and she took her responsibilities seriously, getting personally involved in cleaning up and rehabilitating the area of her choice. She took the responsibility of cleaning the entire slum area of the village of Versova where she had earlier shot part of her movie ‘Agneepath’.

Talking about her reasons for choosing Versova, Priyanka said, "We chose this place in Versova which we had visited during the shooting of my film Agneepath. We had put up a big set over there for the basti (village) scene, and I remember there are people who live here, and there are children who play on mounds of garbage here, and that's their life." However, Priyanka is not satisfied only with cleaning the place, instead, she wants to rehabilitate the area. "That's the best we can do and eventually then it's up to them (the residents) to sustain it. I think the idea of doing this is to create something which is long lasting. And I hope for the best, and that it stays this way," she says.

As a result of this, Priyanka took the help of BMC and the Sun Foundation and undertook a vigorous cleaning campaign, transforming the area from a slum to a clean and colourful community within only sixteen days. An eleven minute video of the campaign was posted on the Twitter by the actress. In the video, the actress expressed her excitement for being chosen for this project by the PM. She says, "It took me a little longer than I wanted, but when Prime Minister asked me to be one of his 'navratnas', I was very excited. But I wanted it to be something that could be sustained."

She also nominated a list of those who helped her with the transformation. The list includes Siddharth Roy Kapoor and his team at the Disney UTV, Prannoy Roy of NDTV, Vikramjit Sahaney of Sun Foundation, Madhur Bhandarkar, Vikram Chandra and the students and the faculty of the IIM Ahmedabad.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the initiative taken by the actress and declared that such moves will inspire people to "look after their own society, state and country like their own house."
