Pratyusha, Jiah Khan… Shocking & mysterious suicide by actresses


The Indian entertainment industry was shocked when television actress Pratyusha Banerjee allegedly committed suicide at her Mumbai residence on April 1. The 24-year-old shot to fame through her portrayal of adult Anandi in the popular teleseries ‘Balika Vadhu’. The actress’ friends have claimed that she was having troubles in her relationship with Rahul Raj Singh who used to mistreat her, and accused him of foul play in her suicide. It is not yet clear whether Pratyusha death was a suicide or murder, but police investigating the case have booked her boyfriend on charges of abetment to suicide.

Pratyusha is not the only one. Name, fame and money bring along their share of financial and emotional insecurities which leads one to mental agony and depression. Many celebrities in the past have fallen prey to this ugly truth. The sudden demise of celebrities, especially at a young age also gives rise to numerous conspiracy theories.

Here are some other celebrities whose deaths were shocking and shrouded in mystery.

Jiah Khan: The 25-year-old actress debuted in Bollywood opposite megastar Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Nishabd’ and further worked with A-listers Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar in ‘Ghajini’ and ‘Houseful’ respectively. She committed suicide at her Juhu residence in June, 2013 and left a note in which she mentioned being physically and mentally tortured at the hands of her then boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi. The ‘Hero’ actor has been accused of abetting Jiah’s suicide and is facing trail at the Bombay High Court.

Viveka Babajee: The sultry Mauritian supermodel, best known for her KamaSutra condom advertisements of the 1990s, hanged herself from the ceiling fan of her Mumbai apartment in June, 2010. She blamed her boyfriend Gautam Vohra for her death in a dairy entry writing, “you killed me, Gautam Vohra." Police said that Viveka committed suicide due to depression, but her suicide case was re-opened in 2012 after after Gautam, a stockbroker, was arrested in connection with a murder case.

Nafisa Joseph: Former Miss India Nafisa Joseph hanged herself at her Versova flat in July, 2004. The model and MTV VJ was depressed after she broke off her engagement with businessman Gautam Khanduja. She had discovered that her fiancé was still married and had lied to her that he had been divorced for two years. Nafisa’s parents had filed a complaint against Gautam accusing him of abetting her suicide, and had sought his custodial interrogation.

Shikha Joshi: The starlet who appeared in the critically acclaimed film ‘B.A. Pass,’ killed herself by slashing her throat at her rented flat in Mumbai in May 2015. Shikha had reportedly gone under the knife to conform to the so-called standards of beauty by getting a breast implant, but the lack of employment made her commit suicide. In a video message recorded by her land lady, the actress named cosmetologist Dr Vijay Sharma and “many married men” who made her take the extreme step.

Divya Bharti: The vivacious diva of Bollywood was one of the finest actors during the 1990s, who began her career at the age of 16 with a Telugu movie. She allegedly jumped to her death from the balcony of her fifth-floor apartment in Versova. It was unclear whether she was pushed, or she jumped herself under the influence of alcohol. The cause of her falling off from the balcony was never officially confirmed, but there were speculations that her husband Sajid Nadidwala was the cause of her death.
