Veteran actor Pran honored with Dadasaheb Phalke award

Veteran actor Pran received Dadasaheb Phalke award for his contribution to Indian cinema. 93 years old Pran has acted in more than 350 films. In his long tenure of filmy career, he has enacted all types of role, both positive and negative and acted with noted actors and filmmakers of Bollywood. In 2000, he was awarded as the ‘Villain of the Millennium’.

Azaad,Madhumati, Devdas, Dil Diya Dard Liya, Ram Aur Shyam and Aadmi are few names among his huge number of hits. In 2010, Pran was named on the list of CNN's Top 25 Asian actors of all time.

He won best supporting actors award three times. He was also honored with Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India for his contribution to Indian cinema. Pran is a member of various organizations, and owns the football team 'Bombay Dynamos Football Club'.

There was uncertainty over his winning the Dadasaheb Phalke award. As Supran Sen of Film Federation of India tells us, "The decision is taken by the committee that includes past recipients like Dilip Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Yash Chopra to name some. Probably because they haven't met yet, that's why the announcement is pending."

Apart from Pran, actors Soumitra Chatterjee from Bengal and E Nageshwar Rao from the South are under consideration for this year's award.

However, Bollywood wanted Pran to be honored with the prestigious award. Veteran actor Raza Murad points out that Pran retired from movies in 1998. "So why hasn't he been honoured in the last 14 years?"
