Pop singer Sukhbir Singh detained at Lahore airport

Dubai-based Punjabi pop singer Sukhbir Singh was reportedly detained for interrogation at the Lahore airport after authorities found him carrying USD 27,000, which was in excess of permissible limits. It was also reported that the singer fled the airport upon the discovery.

However, his family who reside near Kapurthala, Punjab rubbished the report that ‘anything objectionable’ was found on him and said he had not run away and claimed that Sukhbir had boarded the flight to Dubai.

According to a PTI report, Sukhbir was at the Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore to catch a Dubai-bound flight. Before check-in he had asked the authorities how much amount he could carry abroad. “On learning that the permissible limit is USD 10,000, he left the airport as he was carrying more than that,” the report quoted a senior customs official.

Sukhbir was in Pakistan for a music concert and performance at a high-profile wedding ceremony. The singer received USD 30,000 for both the events held on August 7 and 8, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Sukhbir’s nephew Sunny Singh told a popular daily that his family came to know about the incident through the media, and they were in touch with the singer. “He is innocent and nothing objectionable was found on him during the custom checks. He safely boarded the flight for Dubai,” Sunny was quoted by the paper.
