Pooja Bhatt was offered ‘Ashiqui’, but refused for love

Actress-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt revealed that she refused the offer to act in the 1990 blockbuster ‘Ashiqui’ directed by her father Mahesh Bhatt as she was in love.

The director of films like ‘Paap’ and ‘Jism 2’ said her uncle Mukesh Bhatt had approached her with the signing amount to cast her in the romantic musical drama but she refused because her then boyfriend did not want her to be an actress.

“I had a boyfriend and I was in love with him since I was 12-year-old. When I was 16, I started dating him. At 17, I did ‘Daddy’ and at 18, I was offered ‘Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin’.

So he very patiently went through the phase of my first film and said ‘If you want to marry me, drop movie offers as I’ll never marry an actor’,” Pooja said during a session of Jagaran Film Festival in New Delhi.

Pooja said, being a romantic person, she agreed to what her boyfriend had said, and declined to work in the highly acclaimed movie even after being persuaded by her father.

However, the actress later broke up with him. “...And then my relationship ended with that person, though he still is a very dear friend of mine. But then life took over. So now I think I should have done the film,” the 43-year-old actress added.

‘Ashiqui’ which starred Rahul Roy, Anu Aggarwal and Deepak Tijori was a cricital and commercial success and its chartbuster music are still popular.

Pooja had acted in numerous films like ‘Sir’, ‘Jaanam’ ‘Chaaht’, ‘Tamannah’, ‘Angrakshak’, ‘Border’, ‘Zakhm’ and many more. Her last film as an actress was ‘Everybody says I’m Fine!’ She has also produced films ‘Dushman’, ‘Jism’, ‘Holiday’ ‘Rog’ etc.

Her upcoming film as producer-director is ‘Cabaret’ starring ‘Fukrey’ actress Richa Chadda, which will be out next year.
