Philippines beauty Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach crowned Miss Universe, 2015

Philippines beauty Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was crowned Miss Universe, 2015 in a dramatic grand finale of the beauty pageant, after host Steve Harvey mistakenly announced the name of Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez as the winner of the crown, but soon realised his blunder and rectified it.

As many as 80 beauty queens contested for the coveted title in the Miss Universe, 2015 pageant held at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas on Sunday. After beating others in rounds like national costume, swimsuit and evening wear, beauties from the Philippines, Colombia and the US made it to the top three.

While announcing the results initially, Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and Miss US Olivia Jordan were declared the first and second runners up while Miss Colombia Ariadna Guiterrez was crowned the winner. But soon after she took her first walk as the winner, Steve Harvy admitted that he had made a mistake and that the actual winner was Miss Philippines.

"I will take the responsibility for this. It's on the card. Don't hold it against the ladies. Still a great night," Harvey told the audience. He also apologised for the blunder on Twitter and posted, "I'd like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible."

Miss Universe 2014 Paulina Vega of Colombia, who had crowned her fellow national, returned to the stage and removed the crown from Guiterrez and put it on Miss Philippines Wurtzbach who was pleasantly surprised and shocked.

Indian beauty Urvashi Rautela was out of the race early and could not make it to the top 15. The Bollywood actress had in 2012 bagged the Miss India Universe title, but was later removed as she did not meet the age requirement.

India had not won the Miss Universe title in 15 years. It was in 2000 when Lara Dutta was crowned Miss Universe, while Sushmita became the first winner of the title from the country. Both are now established actresses.
