‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ goes off-air, Sony confirms

Sony Entertainment channel’s controversial show, ‘Pehredaar Piya Ki’ has been finally pulled off following complaints regarding the script of the show. The show drew lots of negative criticism from day one due to its objectionable plot of a 10-year-old boy gets married to a 18-year-old girl. The decision of the show to take off air came after few days of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) direction to shift the show from prime time to late night slot..

The channel today issued an official statement informing about pulling off the show.

"Effective 28th August 2017, we are pulling off our programme, Pehredaar Piye Ki, from television. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming, new shows. We are grateful to all the artists, producers and fans of our shows and request you to graciously support the viewership of our newer ventures," the statement reads.

When the show was first aired on Sony, viewers found the plot very objectionable and demanded for a ban. A petition was sent to Smriti Irani which reads, "Pehredar piya ki. A 10-year-old impressionable little kid("piyaa") caressing and stalking a lady who's more than double his age and filling sindoor in her "maang" is being telecasted at prime time 8:30pm on Sony. (Family time) It is to be devoured by the entire Nation. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewers mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such TV serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial (sic)."

Following the complaint, BCCC directed the channel to shift the time of airing the show from 8.30 pm to the 10 pm slot, so that minors do not watch it. But instead of airing the show at late night slot, the channel decided to pull it off.

Not only viewers but television actor Karan Wahi also highly slammed the content of the show.

'Pehredaar Piya Ki' starred Tejasswi Prakash, Afaan Khan and Suyyash Rai in lead roles.
