Padmavati: Dilemma over Deepika being taller than Shahid
After tackling the hiccups in the path, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmavati’ finally went on floors at the beginning of this month. But now it seems that the filmmaker is facing a new dilemma.
Reportedly, Bhansali recently did a look test of Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor who play husband and wife in the film, but the height of the leading lady has become a matter of concern.
‘Padmavati’ is a period drama in which Deepika plays the titular character of Padmavati, the queen of Chittor, while Shahid plays her husband, Rajput warrior Rawal Ratan Singh. The general belief is that kings were always taller than their queens, but Shahid is shorter than Deepika.
Considering that the Rajput tradition is conservative, there's no way Bhansali can turn around this aspect of history. This has left the director in a dilemma as he is finding it hard to make the two actors look equal in height on screen.
A source was quoted as saying, "Delhi-based designers Rimple and Harpreet Narula, who are working with Bhansali for the first time and designing for the looks of the characters, have been told to find a way to make Shahid look equal to Deepika in height, maybe give him heels etc."
Once both the stars begin filming together, Shahid may choose to sport heels to match Deepika’s height.
‘Padmavati’ also stars Ranveer Singh, who will be seen in the grey-shaded role of Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji, who was obsessed with Padmavati and attacked her kingdom to claim her. However, Ranveer will not get to share screen-space with Deepika in the film. Aditi Rao Haydari is also a part of the film and will play the role of Alauddin Khilji’s chief begum (wife) Kamla Devi.
The film is scheduled to release on November 17, 2017.
