Oscar 2017 goofs up Best Picture Award; stars react

The 89th Academy Awards celebrated the biggest and best in the world of movies in a ceremony that witnessed a drama while announcing the award for Best Picture. The Oscars for Best Picture went to ‘Moonlight’, after it was wrongly given to ‘La La Land’ initially.

Presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway wrongly declared 'La La Land' as the winner for Best Picture, but soon after realising the gaffe, announced that there was an error and the Award was in fact won by ‘Moonlight. The team of Damien Chazelle's musical were already in the middle of their acceptance speech and representatives for ballot tabulators Price Waterhouse Coopers raced onstage to try to stop the acceptance speeches. Team 'La La Land' graciously handled the situation and handed over the golden statue to the makers of 'Moonlight', even as confusion prevailed for a while.

Apparently, the presenters were given the wrong envelope which had the winner for Best Actress which went to Emma Stone for ‘La La Land’, instead of the Best Picture ‘Moonlight’. The goof-up is said to have taken place first time in the history of Academy Awards.

Jimmy Kimmel, who was hosting the prestigious event for the first time, came forward to inform that ‘Moonlight’ had indeed won, and Jordan Horowitz, producer of ‘La La Land’ showed the inside of the envelope as proof. The comedian jokingly blamed Warren for the blunder, who clarified that he was given the wrong cue card. “I wasn’t trying to be funny,” the veteran actor said.

Reacting on the whole incident, Emma stone said it was the craziest Oscar moment of all time.  Mahershala Ali, who won the Best Actor in a Supporting Role for ‘Moonlight’ said, the conclusion of the ceremony “threw me a bit.” He said, “I don’t want to go up there and take anything from someone. It’s very hard to feel joy in a moment like that.”

The incident has also set Twitter abuzz with Hollywood stars expressing their reactions and joking over the situation. Filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan joked, “I wrote the ending of the academy awards 2017. @jimmykimmel we really got them!”

“That ending to the #oscars should win best picture next year. #holyshit congrats #moonlight,” tweeted Elizabeth Banks.

Oprah Winfrey wrote, “Whaaaaaaa??!congratulations Moonlight! My favorite #Oscars in memory!!”

Paul Feig said, “I'm mean ... I just ... that's the craziest thing I've ever been witness to. Huge congrats to Moonlight, which is fantastic. Wow.”

“Maybe I won an Emmy one of the 5 times I lost! Anything is possible. Congrats to #Moonlight. An amazing and deserving best picture winner!” wrote Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

Steve Howey wrote, “La La Land won the popular vote. Moonlight won the electoral college. #Oscars,” and added, “Jokes aside, I'm glad Moonlight won but feel bad for the filmmakers of both films.”
