Box-office: ‘Udta Punjab’ flies high on the opening day

After a weeklong of hullaballoo over the film’s censorship, finally the controversial film saw the light of the day on Friday, 17th June. Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Kareena Kapoor starrer ‘Udta Punjab’ registered an opening day occupancy of 45% which is appreciable. ‘Udta Punjab’ mostly doing well in North India and few theatres of the country, house full board was seen.

‘Udta Punjab’ opens well compared to Akshay Kumar’s multi-starrer ‘Housefull 3’. The occupancy picks up by the afternoon.

Movie critic and trade analyst Kamaal R Khan (KRK) tweeted about the same and said that the film is set for a good opening day box office collection. "Film #UdtaPunjab has got a better opening than #Housefull3 in the entire north region. So producers can smile," KRK tweeted.

A day before the film hit the theatres, it is reported that ‘Udta Punjab’ was leaked online.

However, trade analysts believe that the leak will not hamper the box office collection of the film.

"I am of the opinion that it will hardly affect the film. Maybe there will be a marginal effect of it. People who want to watch it in theatres will still watch it there and people who want to watch it online, they will definitely watch it online, irrespective of when the film is leaked," leading exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi told DNA.

‘Udta Punjab’ is a hard-hitting film that tells the story of drug abuse in the interiors of Punjab. The movie stars Shahid Kapoor who plays the role of a rock-star named Tommy Singh who gets embroiled in a drug-related controversy. Alia Bhatt is cast opposite Shahid. She will be seen in the role of a migrant worker from Bihar who harbours the dream of becoming a hockey player, according to reports.

Shahid’s ex-girlfriend Kareena Kapoor will be seen in the role of a doctor in the movie, while Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh is also a part of the film’s cast.

‘Udta Punjab’ has been directed by Abhishek Chaubey and co-produced by Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Motion Pictures.
