Opening day box-office collection of ‘Bombay Velvet’

Anurag Kashyap’s magnum opus ‘Bombay Velvet’ hit the theatre on Friday and the film opened with a mixed review. The 100 crore budget film registered an opening day box-office collection of 45-50% occupancy across the country. The last week release movie, ‘Piku’ starring Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan still ruling box-office making an whopping 41 crore.

It is really disappointing that ‘Bombay Velvet’ could not drag audience to the theatre on the first day despite having big stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma. Now to recover the investment will be a great priority for the makers.

It is early prediction; picture might change over the weekend. Generally working Friday shows low occupancy but the numbers bounce over the weekends.

Trade analyst Komal Mehta tweeted#Bad start for BombayVelvet. 1st show at FunGwalior cancelled due to lack of audience. Velocity, two Inoxes in Indore report poor collections.

Nahta also added that ‘Roy’ had a better opening than ‘Bombay Velvet’ "Opening of disastrous Roy was better than Bombay Velvet initial in C.I. Sad day for film industry."

Bollywood heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor desperately requires a hit. After ‘Barfi’, the actor did not have major hits but Anushka Sharma is on the safe side.

‘Bombay Velvet’, one of the biggest releases of 2015 is based on historian Gyan Prakash's book Mumbai Fables. It stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in lead roles with Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, Vivaan Shah and Siddhartha Basu appearing in supporting roles.

Set in 1960s Bombay, the film tells the story of a small time con-man with an ambition to become a big-shot, Johnny Balraj (Ranbir Kapoor), and an aspiring jazz singer, Rosie (Anushka Sharma), and how their hopes and dreams collide with their individual realities.

‘Bombay Velvet’ was produced by Viacom18 but Fox STAR Studios with Phantom Films.
