Odiya TV actress Jessy arrested for abetting actor Raja’s suicide

Odiya television actress Pralipta Priyadarshini Samal alias Jessy has been arrested by the police on charges of abetting the suicide of her male colleague Ranjit Patnaik alias Raja. The arrest comes nine days after 38-year-old Raja jumped to death from a bridge in Balasore district on February 7.

Jessy was arrested on Tuesday and produced before the Balasore Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Babita Das who rejected her bail plea and sent her to 14 days judicial custody.

Balasore SP Niti Sekhar told reporters that the 26-year-old actress had instigated her fellow actor Raja which led him to take the extreme step. The incident took place when they were returning after performing at a cultural show at Khaira area in the district. Jessy was invited and Raja was not, but he accompanied her to the event.

When another actor Chandan, who was slated to perform at the event with Jessy did not turn up, the organisers requested Raja to perform at the event. After the show, Raja was paid only Rs 2,000 while Jessy got Rs 27,000 following which the accused verbally abused the victim over his capability and self respect.

She taunted him about his professional failure in presence of his event manager Pralaya Jena and driver Dhaneswar Behera. This led to heated exchange of words between the two in the vehicle after which the actor told the driver stop the car so that he can go out to relieve himself. He climbed over the parapet of the bridge and jumped to death, the SP said.

Police had registered a case and had started investigation after Raja's family lodged a complaint alleging foul play. A six-member police team was formed to investigate the death. Jessy was arrested after she, Jena and Behera were brought to state Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Bhubaneswar for polygraph. However, the test could not be conducted due to technical glitch.

"We will conduct polygraph test on a later date, if need be," the SP added.

The members of Odisha Television Artist Association, Odisha Kinnar Sangha, and friends and well wishers of the actor yesterday had taken out a candlelight walk praying for the deceased Odia actor. They demanded a probe by State CID alleging that the actor’s death was a pre-planned murder.
